Scottie Pippen: The greatest Challenge to the player

 By Joe Haefner

"Sometimes the player's biggest challenge is to get their role on the team." – Scottie Pippen

As a player, you must realize that there are many different ways to contribute to a basketball team and be successful.  Ben Wallace shot just over 40% from the line because he knew that his role was defense and deceleration.

Jason Kidd dominated Basketball games without scoring a point playing suffocating defense and distributing the ball to open colleagues.

Ask the coach what you can do to help the team and study what he tells you.

As a coach, I must stress the importance of the role of each player, we do not do this enough. It's very simple if you think about it.  Basketball is a team game. On every team the members all play a role in the success of the team.

Everyone cannot be a Kobe Bryant who is in essence a coach on the court and has carte blanche to play any role he sees fit.  If you understand your role and play it, you will help your team to be much more successful than if you don't.
